Building on the resounding success of previous years, SONGS OF BLACK FOLK returns to Seattle for its annual celebration of African American heritage, resilience, and cultural richness. The concert will once again showcase the evolution of Black music, from its origins on the African continent to its profound influence on various genres, including blues, jazz, gospel, R&B, hip-hop, and spoken word.

I am thrilled to return to my roots in the Pacific Northwest, leading the Songs of Black Folk Symphony Orchestra & Chorus in an unforgettable Juneteenth celebration. With a dynamic ensemble of Seattle and Tacoma’s top musicians, supported by a nationally renowned rhythm section, featuring local vocal talents alongside international stars, our performance promises to be a fusion of music, fashion, and cultural storytelling,” said Ramón Bryant Braxton, Artistic Director, Orchestra Conductor, and Choir Director. “As we mark Seattle’s summer kickoff, attendees will be transported through a rich tapestry of genres, from classical to gospel and soul, honoring our shared heritage while embracing the journey towards justice and equality. Join us for an unforgettable experience that honors the legacy of our ancestors and celebrates the vibrancy of our diverse community.”

Through soul-stirring performances and powerful narratives, the audience will be taken on a transformative journey that highlights the enduring legacy of Black music as a tool for resistance and a beacon of hope in the face of adversity. Maestro Ramón Bryant Braxton, acclaimed conductor and artistic director, will lead the orchestra and choir, comprising talented musicians and vocalists from the Puget Sound community. Special guest John Stoddart, renowned R&B/gospel singer-songwriter, will join the stellar lineup of featured soloists, including Brandie Sutton, Crystal Aikin, Zhanea June and Robyn “Bria” Manaway.

Songs of Black Folk combines the musical virtuoso of Carnegie Hall with the audience enthusiasm of the Apollo.” Serni Solidarios, Dean of Special Programs, University of Puget Sound.

In addition to its artistic excellence, SONGS OF BLACK FOLK holds significant cultural and social importance for the Pacific Northwest community. By providing a platform for Black artists to shine and sharing narratives of struggle and triumph, the concert contributes to the region’s cultural vibrancy and promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion. “We are thrilled to present the third production of SONGS OF BLACK FOLK 2024, an evening of music, artistry, and cultural celebration,” said Reverend Dr. Leslie D. Braxton, Executive Director and Founder of Songs of Black Folk. “This event is not just a concert; it’s a testament to the resilience and creativity of the Black community. Through music, we honor our heritage, amplify our voices, and inspire generations to come.”
