Immigration enforcement across the United States has entered a more confrontational phase, with aggressive raids, street arrests, and the use of force in public spaces prompting communities to push back. From Los Angeles to Chicago, New York, Portland, Austin,
Washington, D.C., and Minneapolis, families, local leaders, and advocacy groups are organizing protests, legal challenges, and mutual aid in response to federal actions.
In Minneapolis, tensions have reached a critical point. Federal immigration enforcement has drawn sustained opposition from residents and local officials, especially after aggressive actions near schools and neighborhoods. Community leaders have worked to keep enforcement away from school grounds and protect students’ safety, emphasizing the right of children to attend
school without fear of federal agents in learning environments.
The situation escalated on January 24, 2026, when Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident, U.S. citizen, and ICU nurse, was shot and killed by federal agents during an immigration operation. Officials said he posed a threat, but videos and witnesses raised
questions about that claim. His death sparked protests and calls for investigations. The Minnesota Attorney General’s Office and Hennepin County Attorney’s Office filed a lawsuit  seeking to preserve evidence and prevent federal agencies from altering or destroying materials related to the shooting. A judge granted a temporary order to protect that evidence, highlighting
the strong mistrust of their enforcement actions.
These events follow another fatal shooting earlier in the month — the killing of Renee Good, a U.S. citizen, by an ICE agent during enforcement activity in Minneapolis. Good’s death sparked protests and civil rights complaints and has become a rallying point for advocates challenging federal tactics and calling for accountability.
Panelists at a recent briefing explained that aggressive ICE tactics are spreading and that residents defending their neighbors are sometimes treated as threats. Local organizers say community resistance is growing into a broader movement, using legal action, demonstrations, and mutual aid to protect immigrant communities and defend basic rights.
As these enforcement actions continue, the debate over federal authority, accountability, and community safety remains a major issue nationwide.
