The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and its Minnesota chapter (CAIR-MN) today condemned the Homeland Security Department’s raid on the home of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s home, calling it an “obvious act of political persecution” and another escalation in the Trump administration’s longstanding pattern of racist attacks against the congresswoman and the broader Somali American community in Minnesota.
In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:
“We stand in solidarity with Rep. Ilhan Omar, and we strongly condemn this unconscionable raid on her home for what it is: an obvious act of political persecution.
“President Trump has spent years obsessively smearing Rep. Omar and demanding that law enforcement target her. So have other anti-Muslim extremists who cannot stand the sight of an accomplished Black woman wearing a hijab and speaking up for human rightswhile serving her constituents in the halls of Congress. Today’s raid is undoubtedly a result of those demands.
“The same Justice Department that has spent two years protecting Jeffrey Epstein’s fellow pedophiles, freeing the Jan. 6th insurrectionists, and ignoring widespread grift and corruption within the executive branch could clearly care less about fighting crime and is instead focused on conducting a witch hunt into another one of the President’s political targets.
“We call on all political leaders to condemn this targeting of Rep. Omar, as well as the broader systematic targeting of Somali Americans in Minnesota, and to demand that the Justice Department uphold the rule of law.”
In a statement, CAIR-Minnesota Executive Director Jaylani Hussein said:
“From the first Trump administration until today, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has been subjected to relentless racist and bigoted attacks by President Trump and his political allies. We believe this latest incident is a continuation of that same pattern of political targeting and intimidation.
“We have seen this administration repeatedly target elected officials who challenge its policies. Coming just weeks before a crucial midterm election, we believe this latest action is part of a broader effort to create political fear, distract voters, and intimidate those who speak out against the administration.
“Our community stands firmly with Congresswoman Omar. She has been repeatedly attacked because of who she is, what she represents, and her willingness to challenge injustice. We will not allow political intimidation, racism, or abuse of government power to silence our community or its elected representatives.”
CAIR-Minnesota called on elected leaders across party lines to condemn political intimidation and demanded transparency and accountability regarding the federal government’s actions.
Later today, CAIR-Minnesota and community partners will join a rally in solidarity with Congresswoman Omar, reaffirming the community’s commitment to standing against racism, political intimidation, and attacks on democratic representation.
